In today’s digital age, having a reliable, safe, and secure vacation home network is essential for both relaxation and remote work. Managing your remote vacation home network can be challenging, but the UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra is designed to simplify this task. This powerful device promises to deliver exceptional performance, advanced security, and seamless remote management. Replacing My ISP-Provided Network Setup

Originally, my vacation home network setup was provided by Xfinity, which included an all-in-one Arris XB3 gateway (modem/router/WiFi access point). While this setup was convenient, it came with a monthly rental fee and limited functionality. To enhance performance, security, and manageability, I decided to replace it with a more robust and cost-effective solution.

  • ISP Equipment: Xfinity’s all-in-one XB3 gateway (modem/router/WiFi access point)
  • Drawbacks: Monthly rental fee, limited control, and fewer advanced features

New Setup: Using individual modem, router, and WiFi access point.

New Vacation Home Network Setup with UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra

  • Modem: Arris SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 which is on the Xfinity compatibility list. I purchased it through Amazon.
  • Router: UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra. I purchased directly through the Ubiquiti store for $129 which I recommend doing so for the best support.
  • WiFi Access Point: UniFi UAP-AC-M Mesh. I purchased directly through the Ubiquiti store for $99 which I recommend doing so for the best support. A minimum quantity of one is required. Additional can be used for larger properties.

    While other brand access points can be connected to the UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra, they will function as standalone devices and cannot be managed through the UniFi controller.  Even if you already have a different brand access point, I strongly suggest purchasing a UniFi access point for seamless integration and management.

  3. Improved Performance: The Arris SB8200 modem ensures high-speed internet connectivity, while the UniFi UAP-AC-Mesh provides robust WiFi coverage both indoors and outdoors.
  4. Scalability: This new vacation home network setup can handle over 30 UniFi devices and 300 clients, making it future-proof for additional smart devices and network users.
  5. Remote Management: Using the UniFi Network app, I can manage and monitor my vacation home network remotely, making adjustments and troubleshooting issues from anywhere.

The UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra is a high-performance network management device designed by Ubiquiti. It serves as a multi-WAN router with a built-in UniFi controller, allowing you to manage and secure your vacation home network efficiently.

The device supports multiple internet connections for redundancy and load balancing, advanced security features to protect against cyber threats, and remote management capabilities through the UniFi Network app. Its purpose is to ensure stable, secure, and easily manageable network connectivity for properties with extensive networking needs, such as vacation homes equipped with various smart devices.

Why I Chose the UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra to Optimize our Vacation Home Network

Managing the internet and my vacation home network connectivity comes with its unique set of challenges. Ensuring stable and secure connectivity, especially when you’re miles away, is crucial. The device itself is a small, white box with a 0.96″ LCM display on the front, providing real-time status updates. Its modern and unobtrusive design allows it to blend seamlessly with other network equipment. The UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra has a robust enterprise like feel, distinguishing it from many other devices that often have a lightweight plastic feel. 

Selecting the Best Location for your UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra

Choosing the optimal placement for your UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra is essential for both physical security and effective network performance. Here are some considerations to ensure you get the most out of your gateway:

  1. Physical Security: Place the gateway in a somewhat hidden or less accessible location to prevent tampering. This could be a locked cabinet or a discreet corner of a room that is not frequently accessed by others.
  2. Ease of Wiring: The gateway needs to be connected to a 120v power outlet and an Ethernet cable from your network modem. Choose a spot that allows for easy routing of Ethernet cables to other hardwired devices, such as access points, switches, and other network components.
    Additionally, the PoE injectors for the access points are also connected to a 120v outlet for proper power supply.
  3. UPS Backup Power: Consider equipping the gateway with an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) to maintain internet access during power outages. This ensures continuous operation of your network and prevents interruptions that could impact your smart devices and internet connectivity.

Arris SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 Modem Installation Process

The installation of the Arris SB8200 modem is quick and easy using the Xfinity app on your smartphone. Find the Xfinity Mobile App in the Apple Store or Google Play Store.

The activation process typically takes about 20 minutes. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Unplug the Internet Cable: Disconnect the internet cable from your old Xfinity gateway.
  2. Connect the Internet Cable: Plug the internet cable into the Arris SB8200 modem.
  3. Power the Modem: Plug the power cord into the Arris SB8200 and then into a power outlet. Wait for it to boot up. The lights on the front of the modem will change from flashing to a steady on state, indicating it’s ready.
  4. Open the Xfinity App: On your smartphone, open the Xfinity app and click on the Account Icon at the bottom of the screen.
  5. Activate the Modem: Scroll down and click on “Activate xFi Gateway or Modem.” Then select “Your Own Modem.”
  6. Start Activation: Click on “Start Activation” and follow the on-screen instructions. You will need to enter the MAC address of the modem, which can be found on the box.
  7. Confirm Activation: Once you receive the confirmation message that the new modem has been activated, connect a PC to the LAN Ethernet port 1 on the back of the SB8200.
  8. Verify Connection: Access the internet by going to a known website such as Google to verify that the modem is working as expected.

Following these steps will help you seamlessly transition to using your new Arris SB8200 modem. You are now ready to install the UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra.

UniFi Cloud Gateway Installation Process

Initial Hardware setup

The installation of the UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra is straightforward and user-friendly, even for those who might not be tech-savvy. The process starts with the UniFi Network Mobile App. Here’s a step-by-step overview of the installation process:

  1. Download the App: Find and download the UniFi Network Mobile App from the Apple Store or Google Play Store.
  2. Create a UniFi Site Manager Account: If you don’t already have an account, create a new one at unifi.ui.com.
  3. Connect the Hardware:
    • Connect the WAN port (5) to the LAN Ethernet port 1 on the back of the SB8200 using an Ethernet cable.
    • Plug the power adapter to the UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra and then into a power outlet. Wait for it to boot up. The screen on the front will display “Ready for Setup” when complete.
  4. Hardware Setup:
    • Use the UniFi Network app on your smartphone to begin the setup process.
    • The app will quickly detect the new device.
    • Click Set up and follow the on-screen instructions to name your UniFi Cloud Gateway, perform an internet speed test, and upgrade the firmware if necessary.

      Note: With newer releases of the app and Gateway firmware, the screens that you see may vary slightly, but will guide you through the process.

Install the WiFi Access Point: UniFi UAP-AC-M Mesh.

  1. Connect the Hardware:
    • Connect the Ethernet cable from the access point to the PoE port on the supplied PoE injector.
    • Connect the power cord into the PoE injector and plug it into a power outlet.  Wait for the access to boot up.
    • Connect the Ethernet cable from the LAN port on the PoE injector to one of the available LAN ports on the back of the UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra.

      Note: For the initial configuration, you can use a short Ethernet cable to connect the access point to the PoE injector. In a later step, we will discuss the final placement of the access point to ensure optimal coverage.

  2. Access the UniFi Cloud Gateway: Once the initial setup using the UniFi Network Mobile App is complete, configure the remaining advanced settings via your computer. There are two ways to do this:

    • Option 1: Go to unifi.ui.com and sign into your UniFi Site Manager Account. Click on the Icon for your UniFi Cloud Gateway.
    • Option 2: Connect a PC to one of the LAN ports on the UniFi Cloud Gateway. Open a web browser and go to the gateway’s address, which is 192.168.1.1. You should see a login screen. Use the same username and password that you set up for your UniFi Site Manager Account.

      The dashboard will be displayed.

  3. Adopt the Device
    • Click on the “UniFi Devices” icon on the left side
    • The Access Point should be listed with a status of “Pending Adoption”. Highlight it an choose “Adopt Device”.
    • If needed, the access point will update its firmware automatically.

  4. Create a Private WiFi network
    • Click on the “Network” icon on the left side
    • Under WiFi, click on “Configure”
    • Click “Create New”
    • Give the new WiFi network a name and password, for example, “The Lakehouse”.  This will be used to connect your devices to the WiFi. 
    • Select the “Default” network.
    • Leave the defaults for the other options.
    • Click on “Add WiFi Network”.

  5. Create a New Virtual Network for the Guest WiFi
    • Click on the “Network” icon on the left side
    • Under Networks, click on “Configure”
    • Click on “New Virtual Network”
    • Enter “Guest” for the Network Name
    • Scroll down to Advances and select “Manual”
    • Enter 99 for the VLAN ID
    • Click the checkbox next to “Guest Network”
    • Leave the defaults for the other options.
    • Click on “Add”

  6. Create a Guest WiFi network
    • Click on the “Network” icon on the left side
    • Under WiFi, click on “Configure”
    • Click “Create New”.
    • Give the new WiFi network a name and password, for example, “Lakehouse Guests”. This is what you will give to your friends to use to connect their devices to your WiFi.
    • Select the “Guest” network.
    • Leave the defaults for the other options.
    • Click on “Add WiFi Network”.

Configure Advanced Settings

Complete the following recommended steps:

Create a local Admin user ID

After the initial installation you only have access to manage your UniFi Cloud Gateway from the unifi.ui.com account. It is a good practice to also create a local user with super admin access as an alternative way to manage the device.

  • Log into UniFi Site Manager – Click on your UniFi Cloud Gateway to open the dashboard.
  • Click on the “OS Settings” icon located on the top ribbon next to “Network”.
  • Click on “Admin & Users”.
  • Click on the “+” sign in the upper right corner.
  • Click the box next to “Restrict to local access only”
  • Enter your desired Username and Password.
  • Select the “Super User” role.
  • Click on “Add” to add the new Userid.

This Userid will only work from a PC on local network or plugged into a LAN port on the controller. To log in using the local admin user ID, launch a browser and go to the address of the gateway, which is 192.168.1.1. You should see a logon screen.

Configure the IDS/IPS settings

Block all access from countries know to pose the greatest threat for cyber-attacks.

These countries have been consistently identified by the World Cybercrime Index as major sources of computer hacking and malicious activities, often due to the presence of well-resourced and sophisticated hacking groups.

Here’s how to configure this feature:

  • Click on the “Settings” icon located on the left side.
  • Click on “Security”
  • Click the box next to “Country Restrictions”
  • Click on “Block”.
  • Click on Edit to select the countries to be blocked. As a start, consider blocking these countries:
    • Iran
    • Iraq
    • North Korea
    • Nigeria
    • China
    • Russia
    • Brazil
    • India
    • Romania
    • Ukraine

Block suspicious activity.

The advanced Intrusion Detection System (IDS) and Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) feature will detect and block potentially harmful traffic to all or select networks. It will also show notifications in the System Log section when the UniFi Gateway encounters any suspicious activity.

Here’s how to configure this feature:

  • Click on the “Settings” icon located on the left side.
  • Click on “Security”
  • Click on “Auto” next to “Suspicious Activity”.
  • Under “Network”, both the Default and Guest networks should be selected.
  • By default, the “Detection Sensitivity” will be set to “Medium” which will block 17 of 35 potential threats.
  • To view or customize the selections, click “Advanced” next to “Suspicious Activity”, then “Customize” next to “Detection Sensitivity”.

Verify Time Zone and Configure the LCM (Liquid Crystal Monitor) screen Night Mode.

Time Zone

  • Click on the “OS Settings” icon located on the top ribbon next to “Network”.
  • Click on “Console Settings”.
  • Verify and update the “Location / Time Zone” if needed.

LCM Screen Night Mode

By default, the LCM screen on the UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra turns off at night from 10:00PM to 8:00AM. Given the screen’s small and unobtrusive nature, I prefer to have it always visible to quickly confirm that the device is functioning correctly. Therefore, I adjusted the night mode settings to minimize the time it turns off. Here’s how you can adjust the settings:

  • Find the “Night Mode” section.
  • Adjust the Start Time to 2:00 AM and the End Time to 3:00 AM. This ensures the LCM screen is only off for a short duration when I am typically asleep.

Configure VPN Access to Your Vacation Home Network

Enabling the Teleport VPN on your UniFi Cloud Ultra Gateway with the WiFiMan mobile app offers several key benefits for secure and seamless internet access:

  1. Secure Internet Traffic While Traveling or Away from Home:
    • All internet traffic from your phone and a connected PC will securely pass through the UniFi Gateway’s Intrusion Detection System (IDS) and Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) firewall rules, providing robust protection against cyber threats. This ensures that your data is encrypted and protected from potential intrusions or malware attacks while using public or unsecured Wi-Fi networks.
  2. Local Network Access:
    • By placing your phone (and PC)  on the local vacation home network via Teleport VPN, you can access local devices and services as if you were physically present. This is particularly useful for managing smart home devices remotely.
  3. Consistent Network Policies:
    • Connecting through Teleport VPN ensures that your device adheres to the same network policies and security configurations as any other device on your local network. This consistency helps maintain a secure and controlled environment, reducing the risk of unauthorized access or data breaches.
  4. Improved Privacy:
    • VPN encryption masks your IP address and location, enhancing your online privacy and making it more difficult for third parties to track your browsing activity. This is especially beneficial when accessing sensitive information or conducting financial transactions over the internet.
  5. Ease of Use:
    • The WiFiMan mobile app simplifies the setup and management of the Teleport VPN, making it accessible even for users who are not highly tech-savvy. The intuitive interface and straightforward configuration process allow for quick and easy VPN activation.

By leveraging the Teleport VPN with the WiFiMan mobile app, you can enjoy enhanced security, privacy, and convenient access from your phone and PC to your local vacation home network from anywhere in the world.

  • Click on the “Settings” icon located on the left side.
  • Click on “VPN” from the menu.
  • Click the box next to “Teleport” to enable the feature.
  • Click on “Generate new link” to generate a unique invitation link that you can Email to the desired recipient.

    In the history section, you can see previously generated links. For example, I generated three links for our iPhones and an iPad. When the recipient clicks on the link in the email, if they already have the WiFiman mobile app installed, the invitation will automatically add the VPN to the app. If they don’t have the app installed, the invitation will prompt them to install the WiFiman app. Once installed, clicking the invitation link again will add the VPN configuration.

Test VPN Access to Your Vacation Home Network

Testing your VPN access is straightforward with these steps:

  • Launch the WiFiman mobile app on your phone.
  • Tap the “Teleport” icon located in the lower right corner.
  • Tap the “On” button to activate the VPN.
  • That’s it!. Your phone is now on your local network.

    To place your PC on the local network using the VPN, enable the hotspot feature on your phone and connect your PC’s WiFi network to the hotspot. This allows your PC to route its internet traffic through the VPN, utilizing the UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra’s IDS/IPS firewall rules for enhanced security.

Final Access Point Placement

The physical location of the access points is critical to ensuring good WiFi coverage for the entire property. This is especially true for mesh access points that need to communicate with each other. At our vacation home, we use multiple meshed UAP-AC-Mesh access points to ensure complete coverage both inside and outside, providing a reliable and uninterrupted Wi-Fi network throughout the property.

I have one access point centrally located inside the home and another mounted high on the side of the home to provide unobstructed coverage of the yard and beach area. This setup allows us to enjoy seamless connectivity even while streaming music over Spotify on the beach.

Properly locating the access points can be challenging because each requires an Ethernet connection to the UniFi gateway or switch. To maintain a clean aesthetic with no visible cables, careful planning and installation are required. The setup process, aided by the UniFi Network app, was simple and accessible, making it easy to get the gateway up and running in no time.

The gateway’s performance in the initial tests was outstanding. The advanced security features and remote management capabilities provided peace of mind, knowing that my vacation home’s network was secure and easily manageable from afar.

While the UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra has been an excellent addition to my vacation home network setup, there are a few challenges and considerations to keep in mind:

  1. Initial Configuration:
    • While the setup process is generally straightforward, users who are not familiar with networking concepts may find the advanced settings somewhat complex. However, comprehensive documentation and community support can help mitigate this challenge.
  2. Additional Equipment:
    • The gateway does not include Wi-Fi capabilities, so you’ll need to pair it with UniFi access points to provide wireless coverage. This additional requirement should be a consideration for those looking for an all-in-one solution.
    • The UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra is equipped with four LAN ports, which are not PoE-enabled. This means that devices requiring power, such as access points, will need to use a separate power injector. If more than four LAN ports are required, you can connect a switch to the gateway.

      UniFi offers a wide selection of PoE switches, starting with models that have as few as eight ports. These switches come with various power capabilities to meet the requirements of the devices you will be connecting.
  3. Learning Curve:
    • For users new to the UniFi ecosystem, there may be a learning curve associated with navigating and utilizing the UniFi Controller’s extensive features. Investing time in learning the system can ultimately enhance the user experience.
    • The Ubiquiti Help Center has many articles on getting started with UniFi.
